If you're running a business based on your skills and expertise — coaching, consulting, freelancing, or anything in between — and you're not consistently getting leads, there’s a simple but tough truth you need to hear:
There are only 8 ways to get leads. And if you’re not doing at least one of them, that’s exactly why your pipeline is empty.
Let’s break it down.
The Real Reason You’re Not Getting Leads
Most solopreneurs I work with come to me saying things like:
“I’m great at what I do, but not enough people know about me.”
“I’m posting content, but no one’s biting.”
“I don’t want to be salesy, but I need more clients.”
Here’s what I tell them: you don’t need to be salesy — you need to be strategic.
There are only eight ways to bring in leads. Four of them you can do yourself. Four of them involve leveraging other people.
Let’s look at both.
The 4 Lead Gen Strategies You Can Do Yourself
Reach Out to People You Already Know
Look through your phone, your inbox, your social media followers. You've probably connected with hundreds — maybe thousands — of people over the years.
Ask them directly if they, or someone they know, could use what you offer.
Client Example: A graphic designer I worked with reconnected with past LinkedIn contacts, offering a simple “Do you know anyone who needs branding help?” message. She booked 3 discovery calls within 48 hours.
Reach Out to Strangers (Cold Outreach)
This includes cold emailing, cold DMs, and even cold calling. Yes, it can feel awkward — but when done respectfully, it works. Use a short, direct message that speaks to the value you offer.
Create and Share Content
Content marketing builds authority and pulls leads toward you. Whether it’s short-form posts, blog articles, or videos — when people see your knowledge, they begin to trust you. Focus on solving specific problems your audience is facing.
Run Paid Ads
Facebook, Instagram, Google, LinkedIn — wherever your ideal clients spend time. This requires a budget and a clear offer, but when done right, it’s scalable and fast.Start small. Test. Then scale what works.
Tip: If you're not doing any of these consistently, leads will dry up. Pick one and go deep.
The 4 Ways to Use Other People to Get Leads
Once you’ve got the first four down — or even one of them — you can multiply your results by getting help.
Customers Who Refer You
Turn happy clients into lead generators. Give them a reason to spread the word — sometimes a great experience is enough.
Case in point: A business coach I helped created a referral program that rewarded referrals with exclusive coaching bonuses. Referrals jumped by 60%.
Employees or Contractors
Train team members to reach out, follow up, or create content on your behalf.👉 This works especially well for small agencies or coaches who want to expand without burning out.
Affiliates or Referral Partners
Let others promote your service in exchange for a commission or reciprocal promotion. Build relationships with affiliates. Perfect for course creators or consultants with digital products.
Agencies or Experts You Hire
Hire pros to run ads, handle outreach, or manage content.
It’s a time-for-money trade, so make sure you have your offer and message dialed in before handing it off.
Start With You
All eight strategies are powerful — but they all begin with YOU.
If you’re not doing at least one of the first four methods yourself, the other four won’t work.
My advice as a business consultant: Master one of the first four. That’s your foundation. From there, you can scale with systems, people, and partnerships.
